Project Purpose and Instructions

Welcome to the home of the Silent Sci-Fi project! Here you'll find the instructions for completing the upcoming Silent Sci-Fi Challenge, as well as information and news about future projects.

Silent Sci-Fi challenges the participating musicians to try something different, by writing/recording an instrumental track using a silent movie as a writing prompt. It is hoped that these tracks, once finished and submitted to the project Organizer, will combine to form something truly interesting.

The Challenge, Step by Step:

Step 1: RSVP before June 1 with your name, email address, and band/stage name, if applicable.

Step 2: On June 1 the Organizer will send out an email/Facebook message with the title of a film. The movie is one which is widely available (through Amazon, public libraries, etc…).

Step 3: Watch the film with the sound on mute. While doing so, write an instrumental piece in any style, on an instrument(s) of your choosing (for our purposes, wordless vocals can also count as instruments.). If desired, feel free to re-view the film while you work on your piece. Note that you may choose to write a piece alone, or with a band/partner/ensemble if applicable.

Step 4: Record your piece. The arrangement and recording can be as simple or layered/complex as you feel it needs to be. The result should be a .WAV file of as high quality as you can manage.

Step 5: Submit your piece to the Organizer via Dropbox, or on physical media (thumb drive, CD, DVD, etc…) before June 31. When naming your file, include your name (or band/artist name) and the name of the piece.

Step 6: The Organizer will compile the submitted tracks into an album.

Step 7: The Organizer will release the album for free (name your price) on www.silentscifi.bandcamp.com, and any optionally submitted video or written commentary here on www.blogspot.com/silentscifi .
